The Importance of Oral Health for Older Patients

Posted on: April 23rd, 2021 by tcg_admin

Richview Family Dentistry wants you to know that there are special considerations and precautions to be made for your oral health, especially if you’re over 65

There are several factors that lead to special precautions for adults, especially those over the age of 65:

*A number of factors can cause dry mouth, including many medications. This can be detrimental, as saliva helps you eat and talk. Saliva also carries minerals that keep teeth strong.

According to data from NHANES, 39% of people aged 65 years and older reported using 5 or more prescription drugs.

Drugs most commonly prescribed in elderly patients include:

Patients with physical limitations

The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) suggests seeing your dentist regularly so they can check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, poorly fitting dentures, and oral cancer, especially for those patients who are over 65 years of age.

Which Mouthwash Should I Use?

Posted on: February 25th, 2021 by tcg_admin

Richview Family Dentistry wants you to know what to look for when choosing a mouthwash.

First, mouthwash should not be considered a replacement for daily brushing and flossing, however, it can be a helpful addition to your daily oral hygiene routine.

There are two types of mouthwash:

Cosmetic

Therapeutic

Therapeutic mouthwash is available both over the counter and by prescription, depending on the formulation.

WARNING: According to the ADA (American Dental Association), mouthwash is not recommended for children younger than 6 years of age. Swallowing reflexes may not be well developed in children this young therefore they could swallow large amounts, which can trigger adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, and even intoxication (due to the alcohol content in some rinses).

When choosing a method, bear in mind that it’s best to buy over the counter products that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Manufacturers must apply to the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs and submit data to show that their products are safe and effective in order to get this seal.

If you have any questions about which type of mouthwash to use, please contact us. We’re here to help make sure you have a healthy and dazzling smile.

Do It Yourself Dentistry? Why It’s a Bad Idea

Posted on: March 10th, 2020 by tcg_admin

Richview Family Dentistry explains the dangers of DIY dental work.

We’ve seen the ads on TV and social media about quick and easy, at-home dental work, but the ADA (American Dental Association) suggests that you take a closer look at why DIY dental work is not a good idea.

At-Home Braces and Aligners

Tooth Extraction

The ADA discourages the use of direct to consumer dental products, including mouth guards, snoring appliances, teeth whitening trays, and bleaching products, partial dentures, veneers, and aligners.

According to ADA Dentist, Dr. Ruchi Sahota, “Visiting a dentist can also catch issues beforehand and ensure treatment doesn’t cause more problems than it cures.”

People considering DIY are usually looking for answers but don’t have a dentist they can speak with. Please give Richview Family Dentistry a call before trying any of these DIY products.

Protecting Your Teeth During the Holidays

Posted on: December 4th, 2019 by tcg_admin

Richview Family Dentistry wants to give you some tips on how to take care of your teeth during these festive times.

During the holidays, we tend to eat more and drink more. The usual fare at any gathering usually contains more sugar and carbs than your normal daily meals. It is this reason why taking care of your teeth is so important.

Teeth are exposed to higher levels of sugar and acidic food and drinks. Here are some tips to get you through the holidays.

Swish!

Eat Wisely!

Calm Down!

And by all means, be careful when eating hard candy and don’t use your teeth to open packages and remove tags.

Red Wine!

We want you to enjoy the holidays, but we also want you to enjoy a clean, bright smile.

Gum Disease. What is it? How to Prevent it.

Posted on: October 14th, 2019 by tcg_admin

Richview Family Dentistry wants you to know about gum disease. What causes it, how to treat it, and how it can be prevented.

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on teeth.

The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. At this stage, it can be treated with professional cleaning, followed by daily brushing and flossing.

Advanced gum disease is also called periodontitis and can lead to the loss of teeth, tissue, and bone that supports the teeth.

Aggressive periodontitis is a highly destructive form of periodontal disease that occurs in patients. With this diagnosis, there is rapid loss of gum tissue and bone surrounding the teeth and the teeth become loose.

Here are some warning signs:

Some increased risk factors:

Your best defense against gum disease is to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, eat a balanced diet and schedule regular dental visits.
